Which pottery class should I take?

Posted by Ashley Merklinger on

Have you ever scrolled through your local pottery studio's offerings and said, "Gosh, they all look so fun! I don't know what to choose!"?

We get it---sometimes picking out the best class for you and your circumstances can be tough, especially if the budget is tight or you're looking for the perfect gift.

Read on for a breakdown of all our class offerings to see what's right for you!

Casual Exploration vs. Serious Intention

Everyone has a different reason for taking a pottery class. Whether you just needed an afternoon of creative release or you want to learn the ins and outs of creating your own style of work, there's a little something for everyone.

One-time classes typically achieve one of two things: a dip-your-toes-in kind of experience just for fun, or learning a specific technique to grow on your journey as a potter.

Series classes typically guide you through each phase of the creation process for ceramics over the course of around 6 weeks. This can include prepping your clay, throwing on the wheel, trimming, adding handles or sculptural elements, and glazing. These classes are divided into different skill ranges from complete beginners looking to start their journey to experienced potters looking to expand their skills.

Memberships are available for potters who feel confident, but don't have their own space to create from home. These are monthly studio offerings for folks who have completed a series and want to fly solo as they explore their creative style. They provide community and connection while saving you the hefty expenses of buying your own equipment.

Need More Details? Then Let's Talk Specific Classes:

6-Week Wheel Series: These classes are designed to guide you through the wheel throwing process and are for folks who want to give creating pottery a proper try. Beginner-level students go through prepping clay, the basics of throwing & trimming on the wheel, and simple glazing in a class set designed for those with little to no clay experience. Intermediate-level students explore more advanced forms and glazing techniques, so having fundamental knowledge of working with clay is extremely helpful for this level of instruction. Classes are smaller than 10 students, making for a more intimate class setting. Enrollment opens every 4 weeks for the next round of wheel series classes here.

Themed Hand-Building Workshop: These workshops are fun introductions to sculpting with clay. Hand-building is done away from the wheel using just our hands and a few basic tools to create in a slower, more forgiving fashion. They are themed for specific projects to help you learn fundamental hand-building techniques. The more of these classes you take, the more you'll grow! As one-time sessions, there are no future commitments so you can learn at your leisure. A portion of the sale of your ticket from this type of class is donated to our selected local nonprofit of the month as a part of our Clay Creates Community initiative. Pottery Wheel Date Night: Don't let the title fool you--this class offering isn't just for couples! While designed as a fun, dip-your-toes-in experience to pottery for a unique date night idea, you can bring your partner, family, friends, or favorite coworker (you get the idea). These 90-minute sessions offer a quick introduction to throwing on the wheel, and they're BYOB. Studio staff then trim and glaze your pieces for you over the next few weeks. These are casual, one-time lessons for those looking for something different from another night-in eating pizza (no judgement tho--pizza is delicious). We have some coming up this weekend--sign up here

Coffee & Clay Wheel Sessions: These relaxed, one-time classes are structured similarly to a Pottery Wheel Date Night, but they're during the day! You can sign up for this class solo or with up to 9 friends---you're not locked into purchasing 2 tickets at a time. This class is offered most Saturday mornings from 10am-11:30am, and comes with an exclusive discount to Cafe Mata so you can enjoy fresh coffee/matcha/tea during class. We have another session coming up this Saturday--join us here!

Private Clay Date for Two: This is our most intimate offering. You and your partner get a completely private session with a skilled instructor for 90 minutes to try throwing on the wheel. The class can be tailored to your skillset, so whether you're a complete newbie or a seasoned potter looking to expand their skills, it's a great session to really hone in with your instructor's full attention. As a one-time session, studio staff will trim and glaze your work for you over the next few weeks after the class ends. For current availability with The Rooted One, sign up here

Private Group Class: These classes are perfect for birthday parties, family get-togethers, corporate team-building events, bachelorettes, kids classes, book clubs, and more! They can be booked as a one-time session, or as multiple sessions over the course of a few weeks. We offer hand-building, wheel throwing, and pottery painting, and most classes (aside from wheel throwing) can be offered off-site for a travel fee. For more information on how to book, please click here.

Pottery Painting (PYOP): These sessions are for those that feel a bit daunted about the creating process or who just want to focus on the decorating phase of pottery. With a range of pre-made bisque to choose from, you can combine 2D artistic expression with the functionality of ceramics. After your session, your pieces are coated in a clear glaze and fired in the kiln to make them food-safe and durable. For more information about our walk-in pottery painting, check out our info page here.

Technique-Based Workshop: These one-time workshops focus on a specific technique, such as throwing taller, exploring specific sculptural techniques, or glazing techniques. Oftentimes, these classes are longer than other one-time offerings to make sure students have a full grasp of the technique by the end of the session. An example would be our Surface Design Workshop on 9/7 that explored using tape and underglaze to make fun, uniform patterns on clay.

Independent Studio Membership: This offering is specifically for growing potters looking to work independently outside a class setting. If you feel confident in your skills after completing a wheel series, you can rent a shelf in the studio and work on your own projects anytime we're open (with communal glazes, tools, and firings included). Memberships are excellent for those who don't have a setup from home, can't spend thousands of dollars on their own studio equipment, or want a welcoming community environment to explore their creative voice. More information about our monthly memberships can be found here.
